Oregon City is one of the most significant historical locations in Oregon. It was once the capitol of the Oregon Territory, and challenged Portland as the seat of government in the mid-1800′s. It also has the distinction of being the first incorporated city west of the Rocky mountains, with the first syndicated newspaper (Oregon Spectator). And Oregon City featured the first long-distance electrical system in the US, delivering electricity into downtown Portland.
Oregon City is located at the confluence of the Willamette and Clackamas Rivers. It is south of West Linn and east of Canby. Portions of Oregon City are also found within the Stafford area, a rural triangle of established farms and large estates.
Much of the historic character of Oregon City has been preserved in the Oldtown and downtown areas. These elements include the historic Willamette Falls Locks, the Clackamas County Courthouse, and the John McLoughlin House.
One of my favorite sites to visit in Oregon City is the outdoor Municipal Elevator. It rises over 130 feet in the air, and has a fantastic view from the observation deck at the top. Check it out when you are in town!
