Metzger is one of many neighborhoods found in Southwest Portland. Located in Washington county, it is bounded by Highway 217 and Washington Square to the west, the Garden Home neighborhood to the north, and I-5 to the south. It is close and convenient for commuters to downtown Portland, Beaverton, as well as southbound to Wilsonville and Salem. Commuting to downtown Portland averages 22 minutes from 97223.
Metzger is a mixed neighborhood of homes on large lots. These lots have had great appeal to builders looking to build larger homes over 2500 square feet, while still maintaining larger detached garages and outbuildings. It is common to find smaller older homes with a large daylight basement. The large lots often provide significant space for outbuildings and garages, with minimal neighborhood HOA oversight.
Historically, the neighborhood was developed in 1908-1909 by Herman Metzger. It featured a stop along the Oregon Electric Railway, as commuters traveled between Portland and Eugene.
When looking for homes in Metzger, it is critical to know about locations of standing water. There are a couple areas where seasonal water can accumulate, posing a potential flooding hazard to both homes and basements, as well as outbuildings and garages.
