Garden Home is one of the jewels of the greater Southwest Portland area.
It is bounded by SW Garden Home Rd (north) and SW Taylors Ferry (south), and SW Oleson (west) and SW 66th Ave. This neighborhood falls into both Washington and Multhnomah counties, as well as both Beaverton and Portland city limits. Yet within the neighborhood, there is a strong sense of community and Garden Home identity.
Garden Home was originally settled by dairy farmers. Cattle roamed the hillsides and trails of large dairy pastures, with several of the larger trails eventually becoming the roads in this community. It was also a stop along the Oregon Electric Railway. Many of the original homesteaders later developed their lands for housing, creating a patchwork of large and small lots.
When looking for homes in Garden Home, you are likely to find one to four new homes situated next to a 1930′s farmhouse on a 1/2-acre lot. Tucked into the trees are large lots that will allow larger garages and outbuildings. Taxes will vary, depending on the specific county and city designation of the property.
One of my favorite family resources in Garden Home is the Garden Home Recreation Center. Built as a school in 1912, it has grown to now include a dance studio, gym, weight room/fitness center, outdoor playground, and soccer fields. It also features access to the nearby Fanno Creek trail for walking, running, and biking.
